A climate for each of us
“At work, if there’s anything people love to complain about more than the weather outside, it’s the weather inside,” Rebecca Tuhus-Dubrow writes for The Boston Globe. “… After all, trying to satisfy everyone with a uniform climate is an impossible task; people simply have different thermal
preferences. … But according to a growing number of architects and engineers, there’s an ingenious way to address all of [the indoor air] problems at once: provide all a building’s occupants with jurisdiction over their own ‘microclimates.’ The basic idea is to stream air directly to individual workstations – usually through nozzles on the desks or plenums under the floors – and allow occupants to control the temperature and airflow where they sit. Such systems can enhance comfort, health and productivity. Recent studies also indicate their potential to save energy, because the building’s base temperature can be kept closer to the outside weather, and each unit runs only when the desk is occupied.”
My Op.
Agree I could not more. Society living under the soft tyranny of air conditioning (central) represents the focal point of mild suffering endured in this comfort-driven age. Nameless, faceless folk in charge of the a.c. in any given building possess the uncanny aptitude for choosing an uncomfortable temperature from a comfort-providing appliance. Who are these peop
le? Hath we not seen the irony?
Possible equation
A.C. Controller Guy's (ACG) sense of temperature + The ideal temperature at the point occupied by the ACG as determined by a consensus (not average) of those affected by the A.C. minus your ideal temperature at your point occupied which is divided then by the average outside temperature of the last 5 days (which has acclimatized you somewhat) which is in turn is divided by the amount of time you have to take walking from your car to your office in the morning equals the amount of average discomfort you will feel in a day.
